HELP! HELP! When I create a back-up copy of my GEOS
disk and then go to modify it to make a work disk it keeps telling me that the
operation can't be performed on the BOOT disk even tho it is 5 feet away!!! I
have renamed many times, used a disk utility to try to delete the files but the
dont go away.... anyway I also tried changing byte 189 in sector 18 track
0.... It is terrible, I have down loaded pictures etc. and only have one work
disk! I have version 1.2. I would appreciate any and all help!!! ththanks!

Jeff,
I think you're using Desktop 1.3 with GEOS 1.2. That's a valid combination,
but it will lead to your situation. The back-up function should not be used to
make a work disk, but only to make backup copies of your boot disk. You won't
be able to boot those backups, but you could use them to restore your boot disk
if it were to become corrupted.
The problem you're having is that the Desktop thinks you're really using a
boot disk, and it won't let you drag a file directly to the garbage. If you
ever really need to throw away a file from your boot disk, drag it to the
border, drop it, then pick it up again and drop it in the garbage.
To create a work disk, take a blank, formatted disk, and open it. You'll be
asked if you want to make it a GEOS disk. Click YES. Now copy all the files
that you want on the disk onto it.
If you're spending much time using GEOS, think about upgrading to 2.0. It's
GEOS the way it should have been from the start.

That makes sense. I bought this from an acquaintance but don't know what he
may have done to it. I would LOVE to go with 2.0 since I have just started
getting into it quite as bit but since I am not the registered owner(I found no
card anyway) it plain just costs too much! Thanks for the help, I will try it
out later tonight!!

Well Ed that helpp me out alot! I still get lots of disk errors when loading
the desktop and/or say geopaing/write. I think the fast lo they use drives my
drive wacky. But I have been able to use the work disks! I will just have to
put up with the disk errors.... I suppose it could be head alignment problems
but they never appear during any of my other work! See Ya! Thanks again Ed!

Jeff,
I *think* your problems there probably are in your drive. My experience has
been that if a drive throws alot of I/O errors in GEOS now, it's just a matter
of time until it starts throwing them in native mode. One thing I've learned
about 1541's, too, is that they'll act up badly when the little fiber pressure
pad wears, and sometimes this is mistaken for misalignment. I wish I knew a
good source of replacements for those pads. Since the 1571 and 1581 have two
heads, and no pressure pads, this can't happen to them.
Glad to have been of help. Enjoy!

I think I will have to get the drive checked out as it seems worse lately!
Still only GEOS tho! I have another question/problem that you might be able to
help me with too! I have downloaded quite a few files(Geopaint) and when I
print them they seem to get shoved over to the right and some of the right side
doesn't get to print. there is plenty of room on the paper but i imagine the
printer driver I use (MPS-801 or Commodore Compat) tells how wide to print. I
was wondering if there was a way to shift the whole painting to the left say
xxx number of spaces. Then there would be no problem as most of the pictures
are indented several spaces already. When I get my color monitor these things
will be an all new experience!! Any way Ed, you are a treasure house of
knowledge!!! Thanks once more! FLY

I hope you just made a typo, but that should be TRACK 18 SECTOR 0, not
Track 0, Sector 18. If you changed the wrong sector, you may have accidentally
placed a bug into one of your programs. If you don't recall what the original
contents of that byte was, I suggest you try to find out which file (if any)
uses T0/S18 and if it's a program, don't use that copy and re-copy it from its
source. If you have trouble figuring out which file uses that sector, then you
better not use ANY programs from that disk.

Jeff,
You might still be able to send the front cover of the GEOS manual along with
the required money for the upgrade to GEOS 2.0.
I am not even sure how long the upgrade offer will be available.
concerning your loss of right margin. Most commodore printers are 60 dot per
inch (dpi) printers. GEOS assumes that you are using an 80 dpi printer. What
this means is that an 8 inch wide geoPaint file will have 640 dots across the
page and the Commodore printer will only print the first 480 dots (60 dpi times
8 inches). This means you will always loose the right 2 inches of a geos file.
The work around (not a solution) is to set your geoWrite left margin to
something around 6 inches (I use 5.7) and not draw on the right side of the
geoPaint files (You can make a template for this). For downloaded files there
is no real hope except to use scaling to reduce the size (not available in
version prior to 2.0) or get an 80dpi printer.

Ok that is what I needed to hear. I am going to check out the printer tho
because it seems to me that it was the 80 dpi and if that is the case i need to
seek a different printer driver i guess! Thanks again!

Well I checked on it and my printer is supposed to be capable of 82.5 x 82.5
dots per inch. Now I just have to find a printer driver to
use with it! It was called the "Big Blue" printer and was also sold as
"Genuine IBM" printer made by Cannon
?for the IBM PC jr. but they must have been stuck with a ware house full of
them!!! Thanks for your help wish me luck!!!

Jeff,
There are 2 Cannon printers listed in my GEOS manual and both of them use the
Epson FX-80 print driver.
If you are still interested, I noticed a message on Q that the update has been
extended.
